NO, NO, GOOD BOY!

By  Sarah E. Kuzik

Oh, Little One, I said “No No”,
In the cupboard you cannot go.

The pots, you see, are used to cook.
Here, Sweet Child, let’s read a book.

“No No” my son, don’t rip the page,
Oh, behold, a toddler’s rage.

Let’s have lunch, some PB and J,
Maybe this time, you’ll eat it away.

“No No” dear boy, you have to eat,
It does no good down by your feet.

That’s enough, you cranky pants,
I need a break from all your rants.

Take a nap, now rest my dear,
“No No” don’t tell me, that’s screams I hear.

Twenty minutes till silence sounds,
Now through the house I make my rounds.

Tape the page and pick up toys,
So here it starts, boys will be boys.

Alas he wakes and clears the bed,
I open the door and get hit in the head.

“No No” I say, he laughs with glee,
I should have known, oh silly me.

Down the stairs to clean rooms we go,
Five seconds it takes for me to say “No”.

That picture frame is not for play,
“No No ooo” I mean it, ooooh now back away.

You do not listen but laugh and laugh,
Now I see, glass broken in half.

Here are trucks, a phone, and blocks,
But, Sweet Child, you chew on socks.

The drawers are empty, a pile on the floor,
So here I say, “No No” once more.

Let’s cook dinner, a delight you’ll see,
Let go of my leg, don’t bite my knee.

I’ll hold you till the pasta’s done,
You are so heavy, my Little One.

You make a mess, up in your chair,
At least this time, you spared your hair.

Little One, now in the tub,
This has to be your favourite club.

Squeaky clean, you now will get,
“No No”, don’t splash, now I’m soaking wet.

You run away, bare bum and all,
“No No”, please stop, don’t pee on the wall.

Oh, a yawn, now up to bed,
A cuddle, a nuzzle, from sleepy head.

One more story, blanky in hand,
You doze off quick, into dream land.

I lay you down, you stir a bit,
And all of a sudden, with pride I’m hit.

I whisper “Good Night”, and slip away,
I stop and think, you were good today!
