THE RAM’S HEAD REVIEW

Hello Fellow Scribes,

Wow!  What an exciting week this has been, working on getting our website up and running.  Spent the first half of Thursday’s meeting just discussing that.  My apologies.  We are supposed to be a writers’ group, first and foremost.

Margaret Moffatt joined us on Thursday and shared with us her first piece of fiction that garnered an honourable mention in the Canadian Writers’ Journal.  It is entitled “A Voice From Heaven” and is a comic story of the predicament of a minister caught naked outside on his balcony, and who is rescued by a woman below who is holding a séance and needs his voice.  Hilarious. Even though Margaret has been a journalist who dealt mostly with facts, she can put together a very credible piece of fiction, too.

Margaret also shared a personal article published in “The Rag” just recently.  It is titled “Widowhood” and tells of her mourning at the loss of her husband after more than 60 years together.  Because she still finds it so emotional, Margaret allowed Susan to read it to us.

Ellie read some more of the adventures of Sivald and his companions, who survived being attacked.  They bury the dead and then travel 2 days to Avva, where they hope to find a healer for their wounds.

Gemma read “Donald Duck”, a short story about a family that rescued a duck that had been shot.  A young doctor in the family operates to remove the bullet and they nurse the duck back to health, and then release him back into the wild.

Susan first read to us Chapter 1 of the murder mystery being produced in The Province newspaper.  Then she read to us Chapter 2, which she had written and submitted.  As of Thursday, she had not heard anything about her submission.  Readers/Writers are asked to contribute their own renditions of the next chapter each week, and one is chosen and printed to move the story along.  Unfortunately, I don’t get The Province, so can’t tell you who wrote today’s winning chapter.

Susan suggested we come up with something for our website that would motivate visitors to keep coming back again and again, so we are always being noticed.  A writers’ group in Newfoundland, with their own site, sponsored a contest to pick the best novel written by someone from Newfoundland.  They generated a lot of visits to their site.  Something to think about.

Margaret, from her experience with the Canadian Authors Journal, cautioned us about getting way too big way too fast, as that will mean somebody will have to give up their time to deal with everything. I can see her point, as I have spent hours and hours on this already.

Bob was absent Thursday as he said he would be going to the meeting of Vancouver’s Historical Society.  Lynette has been busy with a course she is taking.  Michael is in the Ukraine.  Jean is in Israel.  Ann is in Australia.  But I’m still here in Langley.  Thank heavens for email.

The format for this has changed due to our website.  Sonny has asked me to submit it in a Word document. Am hoping that after I send it as an attachment to Sonny, I can cut and paste it into an email message.  Life just gets complicated-er and complicated-er.

Reminder to everyone who hasn’t yet done so, to get their writing bios together and send them to Sonny for our website.  Construction of the site is moving right along.  And Sonny posted one link on there for writers that has many, many resource links listed.  Check it out.  And keep writing.

Next meeting here at my place Thursday, October 5th at 7:00 p.m.  Looking forward to seeing you then.

Lisa
