And Jean brought us a special pastry treat that we all enjoyed. I read first, a series of one-sentence "Impressions" I had written down before they were lost to the ethers. The one about the roast pork had the biggest impact. Food for thought, or what? Ellie read some more of her never-ending story. We hear of how Brekken and Drusana had once bested the sorceress, Honora, in the past, but now she has new powers. Nadika and Meron link minds with Brekken and the 3 manage to escape the Inn and Honora's powers. They camp instead in some ancient ruins, and a shadowy figure leaves supplies for them as they sleep. In the morning they see the sign of a wolf's head on a rock that points northeast. Jean read to us the ending of her story of the young girl lost on the beach. She is found by strangers and then taken back across the border into Canada and delivered to her empty house. We see the violenct reaction of her father when the family returns home. We did suggest to Jean that her story would have more impact on the reader if she keeps the point of view that of the young girl, which would highlight her sense of betrayal when her father slaps her, after her total anguish at having been lost. Very powerful story. And Jean included all sorts of little details that had us right there on the scene. Lynette shared some information she had gathered on the behaviour of cougars, in regard to the cougar that attacked the dog in Susan's novel. Bob said he hasn't had time to write because he has so much baseball to watch. And he informed us he had left in the middle of a game to attend our meeting. Maybe we should get Bob to write about his penchant for spectator sports. Jemma didn't bring anything to read, but was glad to finally be able to make a meeting again. Susan brought pictures taken of her family at Jasper to show us. She had travelled the Yellowhead on her way to Edmonton. Nathaniel had wanted to attend, but unfortunately became ill that day and couldn't make it. Hopefully he'll make it this coming week. He did say he had some good news to share. I did submit a non-fiction entry in the Surrey International Writers' Conference writing contest. Anybody else submit anything? Next meeting here at my place, Thursday, Sept. 7th at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you then. Keep writing! Lisa
