THE RAM’S HEAD REVIEW

February 18, 2007

Gung hei faat choy!  Congratulations and be prosperous in the year of the Pig.  Even if you are a Ram.

Well, Hemingway was a no-show, but there were nine of us anyway Thursday night to honour The Muse, and St. Valentine, and of course, The Pig.  And Susan brought us fortune cookies to celebrate.

Robin had revised his short-short that’s on our website as “Saint And Sinner”, with a biting twist at the end.  It is now a little longer and called “Saintly Valentine”, with the required positive ending for a Valentine’s story.  He also read his poem “St. Valentine’s Day Adjusted” which originated from our group poem.  This one was really funny even though the narrator didn’t get the girl.

Bob had brought a 500 peso bank note from Argentina to show us.  Someone had given it to him a while back, and he wasn’t sure if it was real or not.  And Susan brought a geo-coin to show us.  It had co-ordinates stamped on it.

Bob read some more from his history of the jewellery business.  He told us of Swedish Jewellers Ltd., a retailer on the North Shore.  It was a business in which the second wife took over the store in Park Royal South after the couple’s divorce and was quite successful.  She also designed some inovative jewellery.  The business was eventually sold in 1996.

Unfortunately, Lynette felt herself starting to fade, and left the meeting early.  We hope she has recovered her strength and stamina.

Jean read to us her own rendition of our group poem.  Just amazing what has been accomplished with it.  She also told us she is working at plotting her story, the one she had started reading previously.

Margaret read some more from the Peabody collection.  Now we see that Rev. Peabody and Rev. Peacock are going to work together to remove the ghosts from the castle.

Susan read further about Barley Lick, in first person.  This chapter shows him the next morning seeing Phyllis get in the helicopter with Newton, taking his place.  So he decides to catch up on his geo-cacheing for the contest.  He takes Stanley to Hi-Knoll Park, where they find a cache full of Kinder toys.  Barley takes a little troll, and leaves a Japanese cat.

I was lending Margaret a book on Short Story Writing, in which I had hi-lited tips that had caught my eye.  From the book I read a list of tips to use to check your story when you have finished it.  They were reminders of what the editor part of you should look at before submitting a story.

The next meeting will be here at my place Thursday, February 22nd at 7:00 p.m.  Hope to see you then.  Keep writing in the meantime.
